In-Row Cooling Solution for Data center

With new innovations coming up each day in technology, Cooling technology isn't left behind. Hence now data center cooling has a new inventive approach with In-Row cooling architecture paving way into data center cooling systems. This system provides a very predictable way of addressing the heat generated within a data center or even a small server room by any IT equipment. The basic process involves capturing of heat from any IT equipment in the hot aisle and neutralize the heat before t mixes in the room. Datacenters have always been facing thermal issues due to hot air mixing. In-row cooling resolves this issue, however there needs to be some design modifications and practices that should be followed so as to ensure that the specific design of the system is maximized to remove the heat that is being generated.

The Technology of In-Row Cooling:

In-row is the new technology in high density cooling. It as revolutionary as any new standards in cooling can get that can change the rules. It changes all the rules. Rated at up to 30KW ( ~8.5 tons/105,000 BTUs) it is only 12” wide by 42” deep.(3 ½ sq. ft.). Occupying only 1/2 rack of row space this unit fits directly into existing rows of cabinets. Not requiring any additional side clearance space, this new ground-breaking design has several benefits.

The smaller the distance between the air conditioner and its heat source; the less likely it is for hot and cold air streams to mix. Typically an In-row cooling system is a computer room air conditioning system that follows a horizontal airflow pattern. This pattern is specifically designed to handle hot aisle/cold aisle configurations. The design is quite versatile as it draws warm air directly from the hot aisle, gets cooled and then gets distributed into the cold aisle. While this process it is ensured that the equipment inlet temperatures are maintained at a constant value and that it is also adequate for proper operation. The system as it couples the air conditioner with heat source produces a more efficient and direct return air path to the system.

In Row Cooling undoubtedly improves energy efficiency close coupled cooling.

APC In-row cooling unit falls under the general category of close coupled cooling. As compared to tradition, perimeter CRAC's with raised floor cooling, close coupled cooling is more energy efficient. This results from the fact that the air that needs to travel (cool and warm return) has to travel a much shorter distance, wherein it improves the effective net cooling power. This also lowers the fan energy that is required to move the air. This in-turn prevents hot and cold air from mixing thus further enhancing efficiency.

Also the APC In-row unit is designed to be used as the basis for:

Contained Cooling:

  •  Hot Aisle Containment
  •  Cold Aisle Containment
  •  Rack Level Containment

At high density loads, where the power usually exceeds the capabilities of traditional cooling and which begin to lose efficiency beyond 2 KW per rack, the APC In-row unit can be installed:

  • 5-8 KW per rack using Close Coupled Cooling
  • 8-15 KW per rack for Hot or Cold Aisle Containment
  • 15-30 KW per rack using Rack Level Containment

Infrastructure In Row is a family of computer room air conditioning system. These are designed for installation in the row for optimized sensible cooling and increased efficiency. The functioning is such that the units capture het directly from the host aisle and distributes cool air to the front of the cabinets. This ensures that all the equipment temperatures are consistently held to set point conditions. In addition, air-cooled and water cooled models are also available.

In Row cooling solutions from Emerson:

Liebert CRV, Self-Contained Row-Based Cooling, 20-40kW

The Liebert CRV efficiently provides temperature and humidity control and is a multi-option, precision data center cooling solution. To facilitate a very efficient and effective data center management, this system integrates within a row of data center racks, providing cooling that is close to the server heat source. IN addition, this system has Liebert iCOM controls and a digital scroll compressor. This in turn results in high reliability and a very optimized system performance. What more an additional horizontal airflow is suitable for raised or non-raised floors.

Liebert CRV as it uses environment friendly R4 10A refrigerant is readily available in various versions. This depending upon the data center design requirement:
  • It has 20 or 35kW air-cooled and water-/glycol-cooled systems
  • Additionally it has 40kW chilled water cooled systems
  • 50 or 60Hz models available

Some salient features:

  • It has a distinct precision cooling and humidity control
  • It Installs well within the row of racks
  • It facilitates variable speed EC plug fans and also variable capacity digital scroll compressor
  • It operates quite efficiently with Liebert iCOM controls

An efficient cooling provider, Liebert CRV is an in-row AC unit that facilitated efficient cooling directly to the heat source itself. It necessarily utilizes much shorter air flow paths. This type of CRV is able to maximize its capacity by way of capturing higher return temperatures that too directly from the hot aisle. This nearly entirely eliminates any sort of air mixing. Those end-users looking for a way to maximize the useful life of existing facility can find this in-row unit to be ideal. It also equally ideal for those asked to support high density cluster or blade chasis. This type of CRV provides up to 35 kW of cooling in a single standard server rack footprint. This allows maximizing valuable real estate by a way of eliminating the need for large HVAC systems that are set on the perimeter of the room. It's high density cooling capacity allows end users to utilize more of their valuable rack space. With CRV there is no need to pressurize the raised floor and room as it provides precision cooling directly to the server inlets. Available both in DX and Chilled water applications, it can also be used to supplement existing cooling strategies. All this can be achieved by without having to rely on existing air flow delivery mechanisms.

Liebert XDH (High Density Cooling Solution)

The Liebert XDH in-row cooling module requires very little floor space as it is placed directly in line with the rack enclosures. The functioning is quite uncomplicat4ed as process follows drawing air from the hot aisle and then passing it through the rear of the unit, cooled and later discharged horizontally through the front of the unit into the cold aisle. The XDH draws directly from the hot aisle allowing the unit to take advantage of higher heat transfer efficiency. This particular model is also available with smart module integrated control board, that is designed to increase module control and monitoring.

Liebert XDH is a part of Leading Network Systems Pvt. Ltd. ( Enterprise Division ) high heat density cooling product family. It utilizes pumped refrigerant technology. Since the pumped refrigerant operates at low pressure it becomes gas at room conditions. This makes it ideal for use around electronic equipment. Owing to the fact that Liebert XDH system provides 100% sensible capacity, it naturally reduces humidification to a significant level. As a result a lot of energy usage maintenance is prevented. More so the the modular and very adaptive nature of its design allows Liebert XDH unit to be easily added as and when the demand for cooling increases.

Listed out are the several benefits offered by Liebert XDH:
